To my angel Effie, the memory of whose lifeis an inspiration, I dedicate this little volume.
At the earnest solicitation of many dearfriends, I present this little volume of poems beforethe public, not expecting it will bear thetest of severe criticism. I am not vain enoughto suppose that these little “Zephyrs” willsweep over the spirit with the power of thestrong breezes, which are wafted to the soulfrom the poems of a Longfellow or a Whittier.
Yet, although among the greater lights, thelesser may not prevail, they may, perchance, send out occasional gleams, which shall serve tobrighten the way for a few hearts.
May, 1879.
